We bought our cards and returned to our airship. I met Irulen privately, in her room, as we took off and flew toward the Desert Kingdom.

“I’m not mad,” Irulen said. “I’m just surprised. And a little worried.”

“Worried?”

“Sky pirates are a dangerous bunch. It’s hard to believe Nona was once one of them. And having been friends with Nona for a good while now, I feel like there’s something off about all of this.”

“Like what?”

“Well, Nona always described how she was alone hunting for cards, before she was reset. Or rather, she felt like she was alone. So how is it that she suddenly has a sister and an entire crew? Doesn’t that strike you as odd?”

Irulen had a good point. I was upset with myself that I’d overlooked what she’d just described. Nona had indeed painted her past life as a lonely one, as far as she could intuit based on her feelings. But feeling alone and literally being alone are two totally different things. You can feel lonely in a group.

“Maybe Nona didn’t feel at home with the sky pirates,” I said. “Maybe she felt like she had a different calling. Maybe when it came to hunting for cards, it was something she did alone. Maybe she wasn’t really a part of their group, if you know what I mean.”

Irulen nodded with understanding. “But her little sister tried to sell her on the idea that she had a whole crew who were eager to see her.”

“I suppose we’ll find out once we meet this crew of hers.” I gave Irulen a hug and kiss. “Thanks for being so understanding. I know it’s not easy to deal with people who literally stole from you.”

“Well, I’ve learned from you that it's always better to turn enemies into friends… and perhaps even bedmates.” She giggled, obviously reminiscing about our fun night with Clan Silver Moon. “So maybe this is an opportunity to do that.”

Irulen really was maturing, and I was glad to have played a part in it. I gave her lovely, wide hips an affectionate squeeze.

“No matter what happens,” I said, “I’ll stand with you, and I’ll stand with Nona. Both of you are all I care about.” I kissed her with passion.

We made out for a good while. Then I pulled her onto my lap, tossed off all her clothes, and made love to her. It was an afternoon delight.

I’d tired Irulen out, so she took a nap while I went to see Nona. The cat girl of my dreams was in the canteen, staring out the window at the clouds zipping by.

I sat next to her and took her hand. “Nona, I never want you to have to make hard choices.”

“Hard choices?”

“Like between us and your old crew. I’ll do whatever I have to do to make sure you’re happy – no matter what.”

She smiled and nodded. “Thank you, Damian. I never doubted you and never will. But it’s life that has dealt me this tricky hand, not you.”

“Fuck life.
